Facial Recognition for the SmugMug Photo Gallery

Facial recognition helps families quickly find photos of their camper in the SmugMug Photo Gallery. When enabled, the system uses the profile photo from the child’s account to filter the gallery and show only photos of that child.

This feature is only available for camps using the SmugMug integration with UltraCamp.*

Before You Begin

  1. SmugMug integration is set up and connected to UltraCamp. This must be done from your UltraCamp account and not through SmugMug's website.
  2. Gallery folders have been created in UltraCamp. Facial recognition only works on folders created after the feature is enabled for your camp. Folders created in previous seasons are not supported.
  3. If your organization prefers not to use facial recognition, contact UltraCamp Support to have it disabled.

  *Note

For 2026, facial recognition is included in the base subscription fee for camps using the SmugMug integration through UltraCamp.

Starting in 2027, this feature will be available for an additional cost.

How Families Use Facial Recognition

To use facial recognition, the child must be registered for a session and the camp must have posted photos to the gallery. Families should use an updated profile photo of their child for best results.

Steps for families:

  1. Log into public account, click on the menu icon and select Photo Gallery.

    Menu navigation for photo gallery

  2. Select the season, then the child from the Select Individual dropdown.

  3. Toggle the Use Facial Recognition button to On.

    toggle on facial rec.png

  4. Facial recognition uses the profile photo saved in the account to identify and display photos of that camper.
If no profile photo exists, the family member will be prompted to upload one.

  5. The system remembers each family member’s preference for each child. When they log out and log back in, their preference for facial recognition is saved.

How Photos Display

What families see in the gallery depends on whether an individual is selected and whether facial recognition is turned on.

Selection What Displays
No individual selected All photos for each session in that season
Individual selected, Facial Recognition OFF Only sessions the child is registered for; all photos from those sessions
Individual selected, Facial Recognition ON Only sessions the child is registered for; only photos where that child appears

Profile Photo Guidelines

For best results, the profile photo should be recent:

  • Use a clear, close-up photo of the child's face
  • The child facing the camera directly
  • Nothing covering the child's face (sunglasses, hats, etc.)
  • Taken in good lighting

Important Notes

  • Facial recognition only works on photo galleries (SmugMug folders in UltraCamp) created after the feature is enabled. Older galleries from previous seasons are not supported.
  • If a family has multiple children, they will need to select each child individually.
  • If a profile picture has not been updated in a while, the system may prompt the family to confirm the current photo or upload a new one.
  • Photo notifications are not available in this version of the feature.
